Germany Secures U.S. Approval to Acquire Tomahawk Missiles, Closing Strategic Defense Gap

Germany has successfully reached an agreement with the United States for the purchase of Tomahawk cruise missiles, a significant step announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a government statement in the Bundestag. This deal was finalized at the recent NATO summit held in Ankara and marks an important enhancement of Germany's defense capabilities amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly concerns regarding Russia.

The missile acquisition aims to close a “significant strategic gap” in Germany’s military strength. He described the ruling coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD as uniquely capable of delivering strong, socially just, and effective responses to current challenges. Despite opposition parties criticizing other government reforms such as healthcare, Merz expressed confidence in his coalition’s capacity to enact necessary reforms.
