Germany Sees Overall Crime Drop in 2025 Amid Rising Sexual and Cyber Offenses

Germany's official crime statistics for 2025 reveal a 5.6% decrease in total recorded crimes, totaling approximately 5.5 million offenses, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Violent crimes declined by 2.3%, with suspect numbers decreasing by 5.9% to about 2.05 million, including a 7.4% drop in juvenile suspects. However, child suspects increased by 3.3%, raising concerns among authorities.

Non-German suspects accounted for 42.9% of violent crime cases, highlighting the demographic composition of offenders. Despite the overall positive trend, certain crime categories worsened. Reported rapes increased by 9%, primarily involving male acquaintances or partners. Sexual offenses remain a significant issue as juvenile pornography offenses surged by 19.9%, even as child pornography offenses decreased by 2.7%. Cybercrime and fraud committed from abroad are rising, contrasting with declines in domestic incidents.

Authorities attribute some of the overall crime reduction to the partial legalization of cannabis, though they acknowledge spikes in fraud, murder, and burglary. Public safety perceptions remain generally positive but are tempered by persistent insecurities, particularly in public transportation and among women.

Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that while the decline in violence is promising, it "is no reason for complacency," urging improved protective measures. Senator Andy Grote highlighted ongoing safety concerns, especially for women, given the rise in digital violence and sexual offenses.

These statistics come as political parties discuss social policy responses, including the SPD's call for federal support in covering health insurance costs for welfare recipients.
