Germany Shatters Heat Records with 41.7°C Amidst Subsequent Severe Weather

Germany is enduring an unprecedented heatwave as temperatures hit record highs reaching 41.7 degrees Celsius in Neißemünde-Coschen, Brandenburg, on June 28, 2026. This marks the third consecutive day of soaring temperatures, surpassing previous peaks of 41.3°C in Saarbrücken-Burbach and 41.5°C in Möckern-Drewitz. The German Weather Service (DWD) has yet to officially confirm these preliminary records pending quality checks.

The extreme heat has led to at least twelve fatalities due to drowning incidents and caused a forest fire near Rheinland-Palatinate, forcing the evacuation of 650 residents. Firefighting efforts are complicated by the presence of munitions in the area. Weather expert Karsten Brandt forecasted a steep temperature plunge from above 40 degrees Celsius down to around 10 degrees within a few days.

Politicians are calling for urgent measures to protect vulnerable groups, emphasizing climate control installations in schools and healthcare facilities amid the persistent extreme heat. The Rhine River has warmed to bath-like temperatures, underscoring the severity of current climatic conditions.
