Germany Unveils First Military Strategy Amid Ukraine War-Induced Security Overhaul

Germany has introduced its first-ever comprehensive military strategy in direct response to the heightened international security threats following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This landmark development, presented by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, acknowledges Russia as the greatest immediate threat to German and transatlantic security, emphasizing the urgency to prepare for potential military confrontations involving NATO states.

Central to the strategy is a significant expansion of the Bundeswehr, aiming to increase active personnel to 460,000 by the mid-2030s, supplemented by a reserve force of 200,000 by 2033. This objective aligns with efforts to establish the Bundeswehr as Europe’s strongest conventional army by 2029. To counter recruitment challenges, a new military service draft was launched recently, with provisions to potentially reinstate conscription if volunteer numbers remain insufficient.

The plan also includes a "Strategy of Reserve" focused on home defense and logistics, alongside a thorough bureaucratic overhaul involving 153 measures aimed at streamlining Bundeswehr operations.
