Germany Vows Strong Response to Drone Hybrid Attacks at Leipzig Airport

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed that those responsible for hybrid attacks, notably involving bomb-laden drones at Leipzig Airport, will be held accountable. The recent incident saw a bomb-laden drone discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane at the key military transport hub, with police deploying a robot to defuse it. There are unconfirmed reports of a second drone colliding with a DHL aircraft and a third bomb-laden drone found nearby. Authorities suspect a foreign power's involvement but have refrained from directly blaming Russia, although the incident fits the pattern of hybrid warfare linked to Moscow.

Merz stressed the urgency of enhancing Germany's drone defense capabilities and countermeasures, including offensive measures like hacking attackers' servers. He described the attackers as increasingly ruthless, willing to risk major damage and casualties. German authorities are intensifying investigations and boosting the drone police unit to strengthen national security. Merz also reaffirmed Germany's continued support for Ukraine, emphasizing this is intended to push toward peace talks rather than prolong the war.

Amid these security challenges, discussions are underway about Germany joining the Defence, Security & Resilience Bank (DSRB), which the German Security and Defence Industry Association calls a "no-brainer" for enhancing resilience and strategic defense through international cooperation. This move could provide Germany with further tools to address evolving hybrid threats in a complex global security environment.
