Growing Debate in Germany Over New Year's Eve Fireworks Ban

As New Year's Eve 2025 approaches, Germany is witnessing an intense public and political debate about whether to ban private fireworks. Calls for a ban have surged, with Klaus Reinhardt, President of the German Medical Association, highlighting the health risks posed by private fireworks, including trauma, burns, and eye injuries that place a significant burden on the healthcare system. He expressed concerns over fireworks being misused against emergency services and emphasized their negative environmental impact, as well as their distressing effect on traumatized refugees and animals.

The German Environmental Aid (DUH) warned of a potentially hazardous New Year's Eve due to a 60% surge in fireworks imports — over 42,000 tons in the first nine months of 2025 alone. DUH's managing director Jürgen Resch urged Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to enact a nationwide ban, holding him responsible for preventing injuries and environmental damage.

However, opposition to the ban comes from Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder and the German Fireworks Association, who argue that legal fireworks are safe and that efforts should focus on cracking down on illegal fireworks instead of imposing broad prohibitions. Additionally, the 'Brot statt Böller' initiative encourages celebrating by donating to hunger relief efforts rather than spending money on fireworks amid ongoing global hunger concerns.
