Heatwave to Peak in Germany with Temperatures Reaching 39°C by July 30

Germany is preparing for a significant heatwave expected to peak at the end of July 2026, with temperatures soaring up to 39 degrees Celsius in regions such as Oberrhein and Franken. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts a sharp temperature contrast between the north and south: while southern and southwestern areas will experience intense heat, northern parts of the country are expected to remain cooler, around 22 degrees Celsius, due to cloud cover and occasional showers.

Meteorologist Markus Eifried highlighted that on July 28, much of Germany will enjoy sunny weather, except for some cloud cover in the northeast and isolated thunderstorms in the Alps. By Thursday, July 30, even coastal regions are likely to see highs of up to 31 degrees Celsius, with southwestern areas reaching 37 to 39 degrees. However, increased cloud buildup later in the week may bring showers and strong thunderstorms, particularly from Friday onward, with risks of heavy rain, hail, and gusts mainly affecting Bavaria and parts of the southwest to Brandenburg.

The extreme heat brings heightened risks of forest fires, with certain areas already under warning levels two to four. A recent forest fire in Jüterbog, spreading over munitions-contaminated land, underscores the dangers posed by dry conditions. Public health concerns are also significant, particularly for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, pregnant people, and those with pre-existing conditions. Experts advise consuming between 2.5 and 3 liters of fluids daily, taking cool showers, and eating light meals to manage heat stress.

The warm to hot weather is expected to persist into the weekend, with forecasts suggesting continued temperatures above 35 degrees in the southwest through Sunday and Monday. Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions to mitigate the impacts of the prolonged heatwave.
