HEYLIFE Program Expands Mental Health Support in German Schools

The HEYLIFE mental health initiative is making significant strides in German education, with approximately 800 students currently benefiting from the program. Originating three years ago from a school psychological counseling center in the Kreis Warendorf region, HEYLIFE focuses on promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention among students.

In this region, 54 school social workers and counseling teachers have been trained as HEYLIFE trainers, preparing them to implement the program effectively. Starting this summer, 20 secondary schools will officially introduce HEYLIFE workshops designed for students from grade 9 onwards. These practical workshops help young people identify psychological stress in themselves and others and encourage them to seek appropriate help.

Developed with scientific backing by Prof. Dr. Susanne Knappe from the Evangelische Hochschule Dresden and the Werner-Felber-Institut, the program has received positive feedback from students, many of whom expressed a desire for more time to discuss mental health and support options. The program's uptake spans different school types, including gymnasiums, comprehensive schools, and vocational colleges.

In parallel efforts to raise awareness about mental health, BSG Chemie Leipzig is organizing an action weekend around a home game on March 22, 2026, featuring information booths and a Virtual Reality experience called “IMPRESSION DEPRESSION.” This VR project simulates symptoms of depression through two scenarios, helping participants gain firsthand understanding of the condition. This initiative, supported by the Robert-Enke-Stiftung and Universitätsklinikum Leipzig, underscores the wider societal importance of mental health awareness and solidarity.

These developments highlight Germany's growing commitment to integrating mental health education in schools and communities, providing young people with essential tools to recognize and address psychological challenges.
