IHK Launches COVID-19 Business Support Hotline Amid Calls for Reform

The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) is proactively supporting businesses impacted by the COVID-19 crisis by launching a dedicated financing hotline. The IHK warns that up to 25% of affected enterprises risk not surviving the pandemic, especially with retail sales declining due to the closure of local restaurants, which diminishes area attractiveness. To help, the hotline operates weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and until 3:30 PM on Fridays, providing crucial financial guidance and assistance to struggling companies.

Simultaneously, the IHK in Cologne faces pressure for internal reforms. The NewKammer initiative, backed by over 50 companies, advocates for increased transparency, reduced fees, and full digitalization of IHK operations. It aims to modernize the leadership by electing new candidates to the full assembly. The current president, Werner Görg, who intends to continue in his role, argues that the IHK is progressing well under existing leadership.

Approximately 150,000 companies in Cologne are eligible to vote in this election, which runs until November 4, signaling a significant moment for the organization’s future direction. The IHK underscores the importance of rapid, bureaucracy-free compensation payments to ensure the survival and recovery of affected businesses, amid ongoing reform debates.
