Innovative Health Care Project Supports Homeless and Addicted Individuals in Germany

A pioneering health care initiative in Germany is making strides to improve the well-being of homeless individuals and addiction sufferers. Funded with €375,000 over three years, this project at Haus Maria Veen offers a range of engagement activities aimed at reducing alcohol dependency and promoting health among this vulnerable population.

Stefan von Czarnowski, a care assistant at the facility, stresses the importance of keeping residents occupied to prevent fixation on alcohol consumption. Activities such as gardening, animal therapy, and art and sports courses are provided, fostering self-care and well-being. Residents report significant health improvements; for instance, Hubert Bewer highlighted reductions in his alcohol intake that positively impacted his overall condition, while Werner Zellerhoff acknowledged his ongoing struggle with alcohol but noted progress after cutting back.

Led by Johanna Brechmann, the project is unique in Germany and serves as a supportive environment where residents, often homeless and addicted, can experience stability and even the possibility to age with dignity. The initiative not only addresses health care but also the social dimensions that contribute to addiction and homelessness, aiming to develop innovative, holistic care solutions for these populations.
