Dennis Radtke, a CDU politician, sparked public debate during an appearance on ZDF's Markus Lanz show, where he addressed migration issues and urban demographic changes in his hometown Wattenscheid. Radtke urged for a calm, forward-looking approach to migration, rejecting nostalgia for a homogeneous past and condemning the fear-mongering tactics of the AfD. He pointed out that the situation in Europe is not comparable to the 2015/16 migrant crisis and criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s comments regarding urban changes, stressing that these changes are not reversible even if illegal immigration were stopped entirely.
