Kazakhstan Announces Increased Oil Deliveries to Germany Amid New Energy Partnership

Kazakhstan has declared its intention to boost oil supplies to Germany, marking a significant step in strengthening the energy partnership between the two countries. This announcement was made by President Kassym-Schomart Tokajew during a press conference in Berlin alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Tokajew emphasized Kazakhstan's role as a key oil supplier for Germany and underscored plans to increase the volumes of crude oil deliveries to ensure Kazakhstan becomes a reliable energy partner. This move comes as Germany is actively seeking alternative oil sources to reduce its reliance on Russian energy imports.

Beyond oil, the two leaders discussed broader cooperation across multiple sectors including energy, logistics, and digitalization. Kazakhstan aims to transition from being merely a resource supplier to an industrial partner by leveraging German expertise and technology. The German-Kazakh Economic Forum highlighted 37 bilateral projects valued at around 1.8 billion euros, outlining a roadmap for cooperation from 2026 to 2028 focusing on critical resources, industrial collaboration, and sustainable supply chains.

Kazakhstan produces 21 of the 34 strategic raw materials identified by the European Union, such as lithium and cobalt, enhancing its appeal as a partner amid Europe's efforts to diversify its supply chains. Discussions also included modernizing Kazakhstan's energy infrastructure and joint exploration of renewable energy and green hydrogen initiatives.

Despite differing stances on Russia—Tokajew advocating for diplomacy and Merz supporting Ukraine—both leaders agreed on deepening bilateral ties. As Kazakhstan continues its visit in Bavaria, further talks are expected to advance this comprehensive partnership.

This development signifies a meaningful pivot in Germany's energy sourcing strategy and marks an expanded cooperation framework with Kazakhstan, boosting economic and strategic relations between the two nations.
