Marie-Louise Eta Makes History as Bundesliga's First Female Head Coach at Union Berlin

Union Berlin has made a groundbreaking move in German football by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as the first female head coach in Bundesliga men's football. The decision came after the club parted ways with longtime coach Steffen Baumgart following a disappointing 1-3 loss against bottom-placed 1. FC Heidenheim. Baumgart, whose contract was extended earlier this year, leaves alongside his co-trainers Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna.

Marie-Louise Eta, aged 34, has been promoted from within as the interim head coach and is set to lead the men's team until summer, when she will transition to head coach of Union Berlin's women's Bundesliga team. Eta’s appointment marks a historic first not only for the Bundesliga but also among major football leagues worldwide.

Prior to this interim role, Eta worked with Union Berlin's U19 team and has also served as a co-trainer during the club's relegation battle in the 2023-2024 season. Her coaching experience includes mentoring boys' youth teams, starting with the male U15 squad at Werder Bremen. As a player, Eta had a distinguished career with Turbine Potsdam, securing three German championships and the 2010 Champions League title, before injuries led her to retire and focus on coaching.

Horst Heldt, Union Berlin's managing director, expressed his support and gratitude for Eta stepping into the interim position during a difficult period. He stated, "I am pleased that Marie-Louise Eta has agreed to take on this interim role, before she takes over as head coach of the women's professional team as planned in the summer."

Union Berlin has struggled this season, winning only two of 14 matches since the winter break, a slump that precipitated Baumgart's dismissal. Eta’s debut match as head coach will be against VfL Wolfsburg, where she aims to improve the team’s performance and secure crucial points. The appointment is seen as a bold, strategic shift for the club amidst challenges and has garnered positive attention from football commentators and the sports community.
