Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Boosts Political Engagement with Local Dialogue Initiatives

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, local efforts are underway to enhance political participation and counter the growing right-wing influence in rural communities. With the state’s population below 1.6 million—a decline of 400,000 since reunification—and over half living in rural areas showing strong support for the AfD, grassroots initiatives seek to foster inclusive dialogue and democratic engagement.

One such effort is in Jarmen, where city representatives are hosting a citizen dialogue event at the cultural center. Scheduled for Thursday at 6 PM, the event invites residents to engage with local politicians over fish sandwiches in a relaxed setting. Mayor André Werner emphasized the importance of involving diverse local organizations, including the volunteer fire department, to ensure broad community participation. Arnold Pett, a local pastor and city representative, highlighted the goal to “take the people along with us,” underscoring the focus on inclusive governance. This event is supported by the "Demokratie leben!" program, aimed at strengthening democratic participation.

Complementing this, Karen Wieprich’s association Quietjes works to promote a tolerant society by organizing informal gatherings in small towns across the region. These meetings foster open conversation without pressure or accusations, particularly ahead of the state elections. In rural strongholds like Wasdow, where the AfD secured 56% of the vote, such initiatives are vital for encouraging civil discourse and resisting political shifts towards the far right.
