Merz Highlights Aviation's Crucial Role Amid Lufthansa Strikes Disrupting German Economy

On the occasion of Lufthansa's 100th anniversary celebration in Frankfurt, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) underscored the indispensable role of air travel for Germany's economy and global connectivity. Merz firmly stated that "less flying is not an option for Germany's economic location," emphasizing the need to advance sustainable and climate-friendly technologies in aviation to secure the sector's future. He lauded Lufthansa's pivotal contribution, noting the airline transports approximately 140 million passengers and billions of cargo ton-kilometers each year, which greatly supports Germany's international image and economic strength.

However, Lufthansa currently faces significant operational disruptions due to a prolonged wave of strikes initiated by the Ufo union. This marks the fifth consecutive wave, with pilots and flight attendants striking, causing many flights at Frankfurt Airport to be grounded and severely impacting thousands of passengers’ travel plans. Planned strikes for Thursday and Friday will extend this disruption to a total of five consecutive days, a level of industrial action not witnessed in recent memory.

Merz also acknowledged Lufthansa’s historical reflection on its involvement during the National Socialist era, highlighting the airline's complex legacy amidst modern challenges. Despite these disruptions, the Chancellor’s comments reaffirm aviation's critical role both to Germany's economy and its national defense, urging the sector to innovate sustainably rather than reduce flight volumes.
