Microsoft Report Reveals Germany as Europe's Top Cyber Attack Target in 2025

A recent Microsoft report has identified Germany as the largest target for cyber attacks within the European Union in the first half of 2025. Germany accounted for 3.3% of all global cyber attacks, making it the most affected EU nation, although the United States leads globally with nearly 25% of such incidents.

The report highlights that financial gain is the primary motivation behind these cyber attacks, with over half of the incidents involving ransomware attempts meant to extort money from victims. Traditional espionage accounts for a smaller portion, only 4% of attacks. Key cyber threat actors identified include Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. Russia notably directs hacker groups to carry out attacks against Ukraine and NATO countries, while North Korea and Iran focus on extortion to finance state objectives.

Experts emphasize the effectiveness of multi-factor authentication, stating it could prevent 99.9% of cyber attacks if widely adopted. The growing number of attacks on Germany underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across both public and private sectors.
