München Bolsters Olympic Bid by Securing Major Global Sports Events

München has made a strategic leap forward in the race to host the Summer Olympics by securing two major international sports events: the UEFA Champions League final in 2028 and the Athletics World Championship in 2031. These significant acquisitions come just before the critical German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) vote on September 26, where München competes with Berlin and the Rhein-Ruhr region to host the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Games.

The Champions League final is one of Europe’s most prestigious individual sports events, while the Athletics World Championship is a cornerstone of Olympic sports. These victories underscore München's strong sporting infrastructure, including iconic venues such as Olympiapark, Allianz Arena, and the recently renovated 1972 Olympic Stadium.

München’s bid benefits from existing event-hosting experience and excellent facilities, which supporters argue position the city as the strongest candidate. The DOSB’s decision will be mainly influenced by the 42 Olympic federations holding 126 of 144 total votes, emphasizing the weight of their backing.

Mayor Dominik Krause highlighted the city’s sporting culture and readiness, stating, “München stands for great sports moments, excellent infrastructure, and enthusiastic fans.” This high-profile event lineup is unmatched by Germany’s other Olympic bids, giving München a clear advantage ahead of the upcoming vote.
