New Adidas Bundesliga Ball Sparks Mixed Reactions in 2026 Season

The 2026 Zweitliga season has seen the return of Adidas as the official ball supplier after eight years with Derbystar, introducing the 'Torfabrik' ball with notable differences that have impacted gameplay. In the first six games, the league witnessed 22 goals, highlighting an attacking surge facilitated by the new ball's design. The Adidas ball features 12 thermally bonded panels, a leap from the 32 hand-stitched panels of its predecessor, inspired by the 2006 World Cup's TEAMGEIST ball.

Players and experts have offered mixed feedback. Former professional Lewis Holtby expressed optimism, suggesting the ball could fuel "goal festivals" due to its effective characteristics for long-range shots. However, goalkeepers have reported difficulties adapting to its flight and feel. Daniel Heuer Fernandes of Hamburger SV noted the ball is "harder and faster," reducing reaction time. Similarly, Nürnberg's Jan Reichert described the ball's surface as harder, altering flight behavior and enabling more powerful shots. Paderborn's goalkeeper trainer Nico Burchert added the ball is "slightly heavier and more demanding to grip," presenting extra challenges for keepers.
