New Support Measures Boost Innovation for SMEs in Rural Germany

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) located in rural areas of Germany are gaining fresh momentum through newly launched initiatives designed to foster innovation and regional development. The state of Baden-Württemberg has introduced a funding program called "Spitze auf dem Land!" aimed at enhancing the innovative capacity of rural SMEs, while a new monthly podcast named "Innovation Friday," launched by the Landkreis Pfaffenhofen, offers educational insights and practical support for businesses in similar regions.

The "Spitze auf dem Land!" program allows companies with up to 100 employees and offering highly innovative products or services to apply for grants focused on encouraging technological advancement and economic viability in rural areas. Small enterprises with fewer than 50 employees can receive subsidies up to 20%, whereas medium-sized firms can obtain up to 10%. The maximum grant amount per project is 400,000 euros, with a potential increase to 500,000 euros for projects contributing significantly to circular economy and bioeconomy. Applications must be submitted jointly with the local municipality by February 28 and will be evaluated by the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs, and Consumer Protection of Baden-Württemberg.

Complementing this financial initiative, the "Innovation Friday" podcast aims to inspire and inform rural entrepreneurs by sharing insights into innovation and regional cooperation. Hosted by Dr. Marion Kühn of KUS, the show premiered with Johannes Hofner, a KUS board member, who highlighted themes such as early innovation, importance of networking, and collaboration over competition.
