NRW Greens Advocate for Nine-Euro Ticket and Permanent Electricity Tax Cuts Amid Energy Crisis

The Green party in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is pushing for stronger measures to ease the burden on citizens and businesses during the ongoing energy crisis in 2026. They reject the current government’s tax discount on petrol and diesel, arguing it only benefits drivers and does not support the broader population. Yazgülü Zeybek, NRW Greens' state chair, criticized the energy policies of Minister Katherina Reiche as ineffective for both the economy and the public.

The Greens propose reinstating the nine-euro ticket for public transport to maintain mobility amid the Iran war crisis, suggesting that the federal government cover the related costs. They also advocate permanently reducing the electricity tax to the lowest level allowed under European law to relieve all households and companies. Zeybek emphasized that rising prices at fuel stations and supermarkets demand immediate government action. The party also supports promoting electric vehicle adoption and expanding charging infrastructure.

Ursula Heinen-Esser, a CDU politician and former NRW Environment Minister, endorsed the Greens’ stance, underlining the urgency of reducing Germany’s dependence on fossil fuels to better handle future crises. The proposed permanent tax cut on electricity and the support for sustainable technologies aim to provide relief while encouraging climate-friendly transitions.
