NRW Launches €15,000 Funding Program to Boost SME Digitalization of Internal Processes

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has introduced a new funding program called "MID-Digitale Prozesse" to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in digitizing their internal business and production processes. The program offers grants of up to €15,000 specifically for external consulting services aimed at analyzing and optimizing existing workflows to facilitate tailored digital solutions.

Applications open on September 7, 2026, at 10 AM via the NRW.BANK website, with funding allocated on a first-come, first-served basis until the total of €1.815 million is exhausted. SMEs located in NRW can receive up to €500 per consulting day. However, the grant strictly excludes purchases of software, hardware, or licenses, focusing solely on consultancy fees.

This initiative aligns closely with the broader push toward digital transformation among German businesses, particularly in light of impending regulatory changes such as the mandatory introduction of electronic invoicing (E-Rechnung) effective from January 1, 2027 for companies with revenues exceeding €800,000. The transition to E-invoices is expected to increase operational efficiency significantly and reduce costs, but only 42% of companies currently utilize E-invoicing. Experts highlight that without structured, electronic invoice data, companies risk payment delays and potential liquidity issues.

The new funding program aims to help SMEs better understand and implement digital processes, enabling them to improve efficiency in both internal operations and invoicing, which is becoming increasingly crucial under the changing legal landscape in Germany.
