NRW Relaunches Funding for Fast Charging Infrastructure to Boost Commercial EV Use

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has reopened its funding program to support the installation of fast charging stations for electric commercial vehicles, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) such as hotels, restaurants, and catering businesses. Since August 14, 2026, eligible companies can apply for financial aid through the Arnsberg district government to help transition to sustainable mobility.

The program covers up to 30% of eligible costs, with a maximum grant of 30,000 euros per charging point. Key expenses include purchasing and installing fast charging infrastructure with a minimum power output of 50 kilowatts, grid connections, civil engineering, and related systems such as load management and communication. Battery storage systems may also receive subsidies if they reduce grid connection capacity needs.

Charging stations must be installed at a company’s operational site and use electricity derived from renewable sources—either from green electricity contracts or partly from self-generated solar power. Notably, funding applications must be submitted before any project work begins, and contracts for equipment or installation cannot be signed prior to funding approval. Planning and permitting, however, do not count as project commencement.

This initiative aims to empower hospitality and service enterprises to adopt electric vehicles by establishing the necessary fast charging infrastructure, aiding Germany’s broader energy transition objectives.
