Peter Gulacsi Transfers from RB Leipzig to Villarreal with a Two-Year Contract

Peter Gulacsi, the Hungarian goalkeeper and stalwart of RB Leipzig for over a decade, has officially transferred to Spanish club Villarreal. The 36-year-old signed a two-year deal with Villarreal, including an option for a third year, running until 2028. The transfer fee paid by Villarreal to Leipzig is reported to be 2 million euros, with additional bonuses potentially linked to achievements such as Champions League qualification.

Gulacsi’s departure from Leipzig marks the end of an 11-year tenure, during which he made 362 competitive appearances and won the DFB-Pokal twice (in 2022 and 2023) as well as the German Supercup once. Early this year, Gulacsi had extended his contract with Leipzig until June 2027 but has now opted for a fresh sporting challenge in LaLiga and the Champions League with Villarreal.

The Hungarian goalkeeper expressed deep gratitude for his time in Leipzig, calling the city his family’s second home and reflecting warmly on the journey of helping the club ascend to the Bundesliga and establish itself among Europe’s competitive sides. "RB Leipzig was never just a club for me. Leipzig has become a second home for my family and me, and the people here will always hold a special place in my heart," Gulacsi said.

RB Leipzig’s sporting director Marcel Schäfer praised Gulacsi as “an absolute key player” and “a reliable leader” who set standards through his calmness, professionalism, and attitude. Schäfer confirmed that Gulacsi sought a new challenge and welcomed the opportunity Villarreal offers.

Following Gulacsi’s injury in February 2026, young Belgian goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt took over as Leipzig’s first-choice goalkeeper. Leipzig is reportedly close to signing Norwegian goalkeeper Örjan Nyland, who was already under contract during the 2022/23 season and is expected to become Gulacsi’s successor.

As Leipzig undergoes this transition in goalkeeping personnel, other veterans like Willi Orban and Lukas Klostermann are also facing uncertain futures at the club, highlighting a period of change. Meanwhile, Gulacsi embarks on a new chapter at Villarreal, eager to prove himself in Spain’s top division and on European football’s biggest stages.
