Political Leaders React to AfD's Remarkable Victory in Sachsen-Anhalt Election

The AfD achieved a significant victory in the 2026 Sachsen-Anhalt state election, winning approximately 44% of the vote but falling short of an absolute majority. This result has triggered strong reactions from various political parties and leaders across Germany and neighboring states.

According to multiple sources, the AfD’s share rose markedly from 20.8% in 2021 to about 43.8-44% this year. The CDU suffered a sharp decline, with vote shares dropping to around 17.2-17.4%, leading to deep dissatisfaction within the party. CDU spokesperson Frank Wagner linked the party's losses to public frustration with the federal government and called for urgent reforms. AfD leader in Sachsen, Jörg Urban, hailed the results as a historic success and hinted at possibilities of forming a government through cooperation with conservative CDU elements.
