Rare Ebola Variant Outbreak in DR Congo Prompts Treatment of Infected US Doctor in Germany

A rare variant of the Ebola virus is currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), triggering a major international health response. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international health emergency, the organization's second-highest alert level, due to the outbreak that began around the third week of April and was reported in early May. As of mid-May 2026, over 350 infections and more than 100 fatalities have been recorded primarily in eastern Congo and parts of neighboring Uganda.

Among those affected is a US citizen, reportedly a doctor, who contracted the virus while working in a hospital in the DRC. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that this infected physician has been flown to Germany for treatment, leveraging Germany's experience and shorter flight times for such cases. Alongside this doctor, six other high-risk contacts are also being relocated to Germany, although their nationalities and the precise treatment locations remain undisclosed.

The outbreak has presented a particularly serious challenge because it involves a rare variant of the Ebola virus for which no vaccine currently exists. The WHO has indicated the virus poses a significant risk of spreading throughout the region. However, experts assess that the likelihood of the virus spreading in Europe is low due to strong healthcare infrastructure capable of effective tracking and management of serious infectious diseases.

According to reports, the DRC health authority has documented 118 deaths in the affected provinces of Ituri and Nord-Kivu, with Uganda reporting two deaths. The international medical community remains vigilant as efforts continue to contain the outbreak and provide adequate care to those infected, especially the US doctor and his contacts receiving treatment in Germany.
