Rising Antifeminism in Germany Challenges Gender Roles and Democracy

Antifeminism is increasingly impacting German society, especially affecting heterosexual relationships and democratic values, as highlighted by experts in recent analyses. The 2024 Leipzig Authoritarianism Study by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung reveals that up to a quarter of Germans hold antifeminist and sexist attitudes. This trend intertwines with traditional male gender roles and the crisis of the breadwinner model, where diminishing job security leaves many men feeling threatened by the expanding roles and progress of women.

Psychologist Björn Süfke points out that young men often face conflicting pressures between upholding traditional masculinity and adapting to modern gender equality. Influenced by antifeminist content prevalent on social media, approximately 26% of boys hold problematic worldviews, including beliefs in natural male dominance. Meanwhile, young women are growing more progressive, resulting in social disconnections exemplified by the phenomenon of Hetero-Fatalismus, where young women increasingly avoid relationships with men.

Experts warn that antifeminism is also a strategic tool exploited by extreme right groups, posing serious risks to democracy. To counteract this, specialists advocate for improved education aimed at boys, raising awareness within schools, and including diverse perspectives in conversations about masculinity. Workshops led by masculinity researcher Christoph May focus on engaging men constructively with feminism, emphasizing the need for supportive environments to discuss gender roles.

Public discourse and demonstrations, such as those on International Women’s Day, stress the importance of boys identifying as feminists to foster positive societal change. Annette Henninger from the University of Marburg underscores that antifeminism today cannot be separated from broader societal and economic challenges faced by men, making proactive and collective responses critical.

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis shared personal reflections highlighting the positive influence of women in overcoming chauvinistic attitudes, illustrating the potential for cultural shifts through education and awareness.
