Rising Saving Trend Prevails Amid Economic and Energy Price Concerns in Germany

Recent studies highlight a marked increase in consumer saving behavior across Germany, driven chiefly by high energy prices and economic uncertainty. Research by the NIM and GfK market institutes shows that the propensity to save has reached its highest level since the 2008 financial crisis. This shift stems from deteriorated income expectations and widespread concerns about purchasing power losses due to steep energy costs. Many households, especially those financially better off, are saving more as a buffer against inflation-induced losses.

Consumer mood has significantly suffered, with income expectations at their lowest since early 2026. Although a tank discount starting October 1 was intended to ease costs, it has yet to affect current consumer sentiment. Experts predict any positive impact will be temporary and followed by a renewed decline once the discount ends.

Despite the pessimism on household incomes, economic expectations have slightly improved. Growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027 have been raised to around 1.3 percent, buoyed by better-than-expected economic performance in the year’s first half, though caution remains for 2028 when significant growth declines are anticipated.

NIM consumption expert Rolf Bürkl emphasized that most households expect diminished purchasing power and remain skeptical about income developments over the next year. The rising saving trend reflects a cautious approach to consumption amid ongoing economic challenges.
