Rudi Völler Criticizes Political Influence on Balogun's Red Card Suspension Lift

Rudi Völler, the DFB's sporting director, has openly condemned the controversial lifting of Folarin Balogun's red card suspension during the 2026 World Cup, which was reportedly influenced by a phone call between US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Balogun had received a red card in the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, resulting in a suspension for the following match against Belgium. However, FIFA unexpectedly overturned this suspension, allowing Balogun to start in the subsequent game where the US team suffered a heavy 1-4 defeat to Belgium.

Speaking at a media roundtable in Frankfurt am Main, Völler expressed concern that such external political interventions damage the integrity of soccer. He suggested that the intervention is detrimental to the sport's fairness and implied that FIFA's leadership might have felt relieved Belgium won the match, even if this would not be openly acknowledged.
