Saarland Companies Bolster Defense Industry with Support from New Office

Several Saarland-based companies are accelerating their entry into Germany's defense sector, leveraging new regional support initiatives to navigate the complex and demanding military market. Etatronix from St. Wendel, specializing in power supplies for mobile military communication technology, exemplifies this shift. Managing director Dominik Huwig noted the sector's potential but highlighted the high investment and lengthy development cycles, sometimes extending up to three years, compounded by rigorous military certification processes including waterproofing and temperature endurance tests.

To ease these challenges, the newly established Defense & Security office, led by Felix von Hardenberg, aims to identify civilian companies with capabilities suitable for defense applications and guide them through industry-specific requirements. This support is vital given the demanding electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards necessary for military components. Spezial-EMV GmbH in St. Ingbert, one of Germany's few laboratories equipped for such testing, plays a crucial role in verifying the electromagnetic resilience of products. Managing director Sven Eric Weber emphasized the importance of these tests to protect military technology from interference.

Additionally, iMAR Navigation GmbH, Schwesterfirma von Spezial-EMV, has reported an evolution in their client base, now evenly split between civilian and military sectors, reflecting increasing defense-related demand. Saarland's numerous small and medium enterprises, rich in relevant expertise, are the focus of efforts to realign their competencies towards major defense contractors, promising regional growth and enhanced integration into Germany's defense supply chain.
