Security Concerns Rise as AfD Eyes Power in Sachsen-Anhalt, Threatening Military Secrets

Following the Alternative for Germany's (AfD) electoral success in Sachsen-Anhalt with 43.8% of the vote, serious security concerns have emerged regarding the handling of Germany's classified "Operationsplan Deutschland." The Reservistenverband, represented by President Bastian Ernst (CDU), has urgently called for the removal of this crucial military document from Sachsen-Anhalt due to fears that an AfD-led state government could leak sensitive information to Russia.

The "Operationsplan Deutschland" is a strictly confidential document spanning over 1000 pages, detailing Germany's defense strategies including NATO troop movements and responses to potential military attacks. Presently, all 16 state governments hold the plan, which raises alarm given the AfD's pro-Russian stance and potential influence in Sachsen-Anhalt's government.

Bastian Ernst warned that the AfD represents a significant threat to national security, stating, "Should the AfD lead the state government, the likelihood of critical information leaking to Russia cannot be ignored." He urged for the plan to be centralized and secured at the Federal Ministry of Defense, limiting access to authorized personnel only.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) appears supportive of this proposal, reportedly endorsing the retrieval of the plan from Sachsen-Anhalt in recent discussions with defense experts from coalition factions. CDU defense expert Roderich Kiesewetter emphasized the Kremlin's strategy to exploit internal divisions within Germany, particularly over Russia, which could undermine Germany's reliability as a NATO logistical hub.

The election marked a significant shift in Sachsen-Anhalt, with the CDU losing more than half of its votes while the AfD achieved a historic victory, making it the first time a right-wing extremist party may form a state government in Germany.

The federal government and defense circles have been reportedly considering measures to secure military operations and NATO logistics in light of potentially non-cooperative state governments, underscoring the delicate balance of political developments and national security.
