Severe 2026 Heat Wave and Drought Threaten German Agriculture with Major Crop Failures

Germany is grappling with one of its most severe heat waves and droughts in recent history, with temperatures soaring up to 39 degrees Celsius, according to the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). This extreme weather has caused widespread distress across the country’s natural environment and economy, with yellow-brown fields, dwindling water levels in rivers and lakes, and affected cargo shipping routes.

The German agricultural sector is facing dramatic consequences. The Deutscher Bauernverband (German Farmers' Association) warns of substantial harvest losses this year due to the persistent drought. President Joachim Rukwied highlighted that grain yields, particularly wheat and rapeseed, are expected to be below average. Autumn crops such as potatoes, vegetables, sugar beets, corn, and soybeans are also expected to suffer considerable reductions. The situation in southern Germany is especially dire, where some farmers may face total crop failures. In contrast, northern regions have experienced some rainfall, resulting in better but still below-average yields.

Economic pressures are mounting as farmers struggle with high costs amid low prices for agricultural products. Feed supplies are critically low in the south, forcing some farmers to slaughter livestock prematurely. Rukwied stressed the intense financial strain on farmers, many of whom are unable to afford essential inputs like plant protection and fertilizers, increasing the demand for liquidity and loans.

To alleviate the crisis, the German Farmers' Association is calling on the government for urgent support measures. These include tripling EU fertilizer aid from 60 million to 180 million euros, advancing 80% of direct EU payments to farmers by October, and enacting significant tax reductions on diesel fuel at least until the end of November. Additionally, Rukwied advocates for establishing a tax-free risk equalization reserve to help farmers manage financial risks associated with severe climate events. The agricultural sector has been adapting to climate changes over recent years and now urgently requires investment in more heat-tolerant and resilient crop varieties to withstand ongoing and future challenges.

With water levels critically low and fields parched, this year's harvest outlook remains grim, threatening not only crops but also farmers' livelihoods across the country.
