Severe Storms and Tornado Confirmed in Germany Cause Fatalities and Widespread Damage

Severe storms that swept across Germany overnight on August 20, 2026, caused significant destruction, multiple injuries, and at least three fatalities, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

The DWD confirmed a tornado struck Fürstenwalde in Brandenburg, scattering debris and injuring several people. Two individuals were hospitalized after a tree fell on their vehicle. In Wetzlar, around 60 houses suffered damage ranging from missing roof tiles to complete roof loss, with reports indicating another tornado may have occurred in that area.

Tragically, two women died in Rheinland-Pfalz due to falling trees. One 58-year-old woman was killed while seeking shelter along with a 47-year-old companion who sustained injuries. In Thüringen, a 40-year-old man was fatally struck by tree debris while with his child, who narrowly escaped harm. Additional incidents included injuries from fallen trees in Suhl and flooding in Weimar, prompting numerous emergency responses.

Severe weather warnings remain in effect, particularly for Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The storm forced the evacuation of 3,500 guests from a shooting festival in Kronach; however, festivities resumed indoors safely.

These events highlight the intense impact of the storms on multiple German states, with power outages and structural damages reported, such as torn walls in Höhr-Grenzhausen.
