Slight Decline in Refugee Numbers in Germany in First Half of 2026

Germany's refugee population has slightly decreased to about 3.5 million in the first half of 2026, marking a reduction of approximately 20,000 people. A notable aspect of the decline relates to Ukrainian refugees: in June 2026, only 3,919 Ukrainian nationals applied for asylum – a substantial drop compared to previous years. Furthermore, 31,662 Ukrainian refugees were registered as having left Germany in the same period, resulting in a net increase of just 20,857 Ukrainians residing in Germany, significantly lower than the 88,000 net increase reported in 2025.
