Storm 'Luise' Ushers in Severe Weather Chaos Across Germany with Injuries and Disruptions
The autumn storm 'Luise' caused injuries, transport chaos, and severe weather warnings across Germany, with a new storm 'Manja' expected to follow soon.
Key details
- Storm 'Luise' caused two serious injuries and multiple lesser injuries across western Germany.
- Train services faced significant disruptions with stranded trains and damaged infrastructure.
- The German Weather Service issued red warnings for heavy rain and strong winds, especially in the southwest and coastal regions.
- A new storm, 'Manja', is forecasted to arrive Sunday, bringing further rain and gusty conditions.
Germany has been battered by the first significant autumn storm of 2026, named 'Luise' (internationally known as 'Austen'), which caused extensive damage, injuries, and widespread disruptions across western and southwestern regions. The storm, which brought gusts up to 85 km/h in flatlands and stronger winds at higher elevations, notably affected transport and public safety over the past few days.
Severe incidents included two serious injuries in Nastätten, Rheinland-Pfalz, where a sudden gust toppled a structure during a local market, with one victim airlifted to hospital. Other injuries occurred when a cyclist was struck by a fallen tree branch in Seligenstadt and a pedestrian was hit by a falling advertising sign in Lebach. Emergency services in regions like Saarland responded to nearly 60 calls regarding fallen trees and debris.
Train services were heavily impacted, with key stations in Karlsruhe and Pforzheim reporting blockages from fallen trees and damaged overhead lines. An ICE train carrying 280 passengers stalled in Aachen due to overhead line damage, requiring a diesel locomotive tow, while thirty passengers had to be rescued from a stranded train between Epe and Coesfeld. Several highways also faced temporary closures due to downed trees.
The German Weather Service (DWD) issued official severe weather warnings affecting over 340 districts, including the highest alert level for persistent heavy rainfall in southwestern areas such as Freudenstadt and Freiburg, with precipitation between 40 and 80 liters per square meter. Evening thunderstorm risks accompanied strong storm gusts, with wind speeds reaching potentially hurricane force in mountainous zones.
The impact extended to infrastructure with an uprooted wind turbine in Weeze and downed power lines causing additional safety concerns. Authorities also warned of possible storm surges, particularly in Hamburg, where flooding of low-lying areas could occur. As winds eased slightly on Saturday with the storm moving north toward the Baltic Sea, meteorologists cautioned that a new storm, named 'Manja,' is expected on Sunday, bringing further strong winds potentially up to 100 km/h along the North Sea coast and heavy rainfall.
Officials advised the public to avoid parks, forests, and outdoor events; several amusement parks closed outdoor attractions as a precaution. The timing of these storms, coming with autumn foliage still on trees and already saturated soils, increases the risk of falling branches and subsequent property and personal injury.
The German public remains on alert for continuing adverse weather conditions this weekend as cleanup efforts proceed amid ongoing risks of flooding, transport interruptions, and severe wind gusts.
