Study Reveals EU Exports Support 7.2 Million Jobs in Germany and Boost Economy

A recent study conducted by Prognos for the Bavarian Business Association highlights the critical economic role that exports to the European Union play for Germany. According to the report, approximately 7.2 million jobs in Germany depend on exports within the EU, indicating a substantial workforce tied directly to export activities. In 2022, these exports contributed an estimated €550 billion to Germany’s gross value added.

Key industrial sectors benefiting from EU demand include the automotive and machinery industries, which are deeply integrated into European production networks. The study points out that while Germany’s exports to major non-EU markets such as the US and China have declined, exports within the EU are on the rise. Notably, German exports to France increased by 7.6%, and to the Netherlands by 9.0%, underscoring the importance of the EU as a stable economic partner amid geopolitical uncertainties.

The research also emphasizes the positive economic benefits arising from the free movement of goods, services, and people within the Schengen Area, estimating an additional economic effect valued between €1.5 billion and €2 billion. Conversely, the study highlights challenges facing German exports, especially due to US tariffs adversely affecting the automotive industry. Volkswagen’s CEO has cited these tariffs as a significant hurdle for the company’s competitiveness.

The study concludes with a call for enhanced economic conditions across Europe and the reduction of existing trade barriers to strengthen Germany’s export competitiveness.
