Swimming Bans Issued at Schleswig-Holstein Beaches and Lakes Due to Toxic Blue-Green Algae and Bacterial Contamination

Several lakes and coastal bathing areas in Schleswig-Holstein are currently subject to swimming bans due to elevated levels of toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and bacterial contamination. The affected locations include Bordesholmer See, Wardersee, Dörpsee Emkendorf, and Brahmsee, where swimming prohibitions are imposed until approximately August 19. The Baltic Sea bathing spot Kellenhusen is under a ban until around August 17. Additional restrictions apply at the Ratzeburger Küchensee's Aqua Siwa beach, Ritzerauer See, and Luisenbad at Möllner Schulsee due to persistent blue-green algae issues. Authorities warn that exposure to these algae can cause skin irritation and, if ingested, nausea and vomiting. Consequently, children and pets should avoid contact with the water, and water sports such as surfing and waterskiing are discouraged. Furthermore, a bathing ban has been established at the north beach of Großensee owing to high concentrations of coliform bacteria, which pose a risk of gastrointestinal illnesses. These measures reflect heightened public health concerns amid ongoing environmental challenges in the region.
