Trump Announces Major Reduction of US Troops in Germany, Surpassing Initial Plans

US President Donald Trump has revealed plans to significantly reduce the number of American troops stationed in Germany, indicating a withdrawal far exceeding the previously announced figure of 5,000 soldiers. Trump did not specify the exact number during a Florida press conference, but confirmed the reduction will be “by far more than 5,000,” with the drawdown expected to take place within six to twelve months.

This development follows an extensive Pentagon review of US military presence in Europe, aligning troop deployments with operational needs and geopolitical realities. Currently, approximately 36,000 US troops are based in Germany, out of the roughly 86,000 to 100,000 stationed across Europe. Key US military installations affected include the US European Command (EUCOM) headquarters in Stuttgart and Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate, a critical hub for US operations in the Middle East.

Tensions between the US and Germany appear to have influenced the decision, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly criticizing US and Israeli policies toward Iran. Merz described the US approach as lacking clear strategy and noted a perceived humiliating stance toward the Iranian leadership. President Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with Spain and Italy's support regarding the Iran conflict.

Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius responded by emphasizing the vital role of American troops in European security while calling for Europe to take more responsibility for its defense. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed that the alliance is engaging with the US to clarify the scope and implications of the troop reductions.

The withdrawal holds significant implications for NATO’s security posture in Europe, particularly given Germany’s central role in hosting US forces and coordinating operations. Meanwhile, Trump reaffirmed his hardline stance on Iran, expressing rejection of a new Iranian negotiation proposal and a desire to dismantle Iran’s missile production capabilities while continuing arms sales to Middle Eastern allies.
