Union Berlin Kicks Off Bundesliga Season Against Dominant Bayern Munich Amid Shifting Women’s Football Landscape

The 37th season of the women’s Bundesliga is set to begin with Union Berlin facing reigning champions Bayern Munich, who seek their fifth straight title. Union, finishing ninth last season, is eager to improve after making five key signings and a morale-boosting 3-1 pre-season win over Paris St. Germain. The season opener on Friday at 18:20 promises an exciting clash that highlights the dynamic competition within German women’s football.

However, the wider context signals significant challenges for the Bundesliga’s status. Nearly half of the German national women’s players, including stars Lea Schüller and Selina Cerci, now compete abroad, primarily in England’s Women’s Super League (WSL). This shift is largely driven by England’s increased investment and professional standards since 2018/19, enabling their league to surpass Germany’s.
