US Firm Madison Air Solutions Acquires German Ventilation Leader EBM-Papst for €4.8 Billion

German family-owned ventilation specialist EBM-Papst has been acquired by US company Madison Air Solutions in a deal worth nearly 4.8 billion euros. Despite the change in ownership, EBM-Papst’s headquarters will remain in Mulfingen, Baden-Württemberg, ensuring the company’s continued presence in Germany for the time being. The acquisition is strategically aimed at accelerating growth in EBM-Papst’s ventilator business, particularly with rising demand for cooling solutions in data centers fueled by advances in artificial intelligence and new technologies.

EBM-Papst CEO Klaus Geißdörfer highlighted that the company had the capacity to continue growing independently but believed partnering with a strong US firm would speed up growth and innovation. The company reported a 12% increase in its core Air Technology segment for fiscal year 2025/26, with expectations of more than 10% growth in 2026/27.

However, the acquisition has raised concerns among economic experts about the potential implications for Germany’s workforce and industrial base. There are fears jobs and critical investment could eventually shift from Germany to the US, potentially diminishing EBM-Papst’s local importance. While the company has assured that Mulfingen will remain the main location for now, long-term effects on employment and development have sparked skepticism.

This transaction also surfaces amid debates on Germany’s business climate. Siemens Healthineers CEO Bernhard Montag criticized some German business leaders for their frequent complaints about the domestic economic environment, emphasizing the importance of companies taking responsibility for growth themselves. Montag affirmed that Siemens Healthineers remains committed to Germany, having invested 650 million euros in German locations and maintaining over 20% of its workforce in the country.
