US Pentagon Hails Germany's Historic Defense Spending Surge and NATO Commitment

The US Department of Defense has openly praised Germany's substantial increase in defense spending, describing it as a "historical transformation" and a leading example among NATO allies. Germany is set to meet NATO's ambitious target of investing 5% of its GDP in defense and security by 2029, ahead of the alliance's 2035 deadline. This significant boost marks the highest German defense expenditure since the Cold War.

Elbridge Colby, the US Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, commended Germany before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, highlighting the country’s shift from decades of demilitarization to rapid rearmament as an "extraordinary tectonic shift." He noted that NATO members, including Germany, have taken credible steps in fulfilling defense commitments made at the NATO summit in The Hague.

Germany plans to allocate nearly 125 billion euros to defense in 2026, a clear signal of its commitment to bolstering national and allied security in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and broader geopolitical challenges. United States defense officials, including Secretary Pete Hegseth, praised German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius for Germany's leading role in strengthening NATO's European defense capabilities.

Further cementing transatlantic defense cooperation, Pistorius and Hegseth recently signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing collaboration in arms production. Pistorius characterized the discussions as very relaxed, signaling strong bilateral ties and shared strategic interests.

This heightened defense effort by Germany represents a significant policy turnaround driven by recent global security threats and US diplomatic pressure during former President Donald Trump's term. According to US officials, Germany’s progress would have seemed unlikely without this political impetus.
