US President Donald Trump has renewed threats to reduce the US military presence in Germany, a development stirring political tensions and security concerns across Germany and the broader transatlantic alliance. His renewed stance follows criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, particularly over Trump's handling of the Iran conflict. Trump sharply responded on his social media platform, accusing Merz of ignorance and claiming, "Germany is doing poorly, economically and otherwise!" Trump indicated that a decision on troop reductions would be announced soon. Currently, approximately 39,000 US troops are stationed in Germany, forming a significant portion of the roughly 86,000 US soldiers deployed across Europe.

Chancellor Merz, while reaffirming the importance of the transatlantic partnership and increased German defense spending, has publicly criticized the US for lacking a clear strategy in the Iran conflict, a stance echoed by former US General Ben Hodges. The strategic importance of US bases such as Ramstein Air Base—the largest US air force base outside the United States—and the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, remains a focal point for NATO operations, particularly regarding logistical support to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Economically, US bases significantly contribute to local economies; for instance, the Ramstein area benefits from over $2 billion annually and hosts about 8,000 US residents.

A law recently enacted by the US Congress complicates rapid troop reductions, requiring additional oversight if the total number of US troops in Europe falls below 76,000 for more than 45 days. Local German officials, including Ramstein's mayor, have expressed concern about the potential social and economic impacts of reduced US military presence.
