In a move aimed at reversing their declining fortunes, Wolfsburg has brought back Dieter Hecking as head coach. Hecking, who previously managed the club from 2013 to 2016, led them to a DFB-Pokal victory in 2015 and qualified for the Champions League. His return is seen as a stabilizing choice, with Hecking expressing a strong commitment: "Returning to VfL Wolfsburg means a lot to me. The dismissal of Bauer, who took charge in November but oversaw six losses in seven Bundesliga matches, reflects the urgency Wolfsburg faces as the season nears its conclusion. Sports director Peter Christiansen was also relieved of his duties amid criticism for poor squad management, despite his previous successes with the club's women's team. Club chairman Sebastian Rudolph cited a lack of positive results as a key factor in Christiansen's departure.

Wolfsburg's current crisis combines insufficient team spirit with persistent weaknesses in both attack and defense, aggravated by inadequate reinforcements during the transfer windows. This difficult situation mirrors the club's historical struggles during the 2017 and 2018 relegation playoffs.

His previous managerial stint included a less successful period at VfL Bochum, where he was dismissed after failing to prevent relegation in 2023.
