Wertgarantie Group Anchors Generative AI in Operations, Hamburg Mittelstand Explores Innovation Amid Challenges

Over the past two years, the Wertgarantie Group has successfully transitioned from initial experiments with generative AI to embedding it as a fundamental part of its business processes through the development of its proprietary AI platform, WGG GPT. Beginning with GenAI bootcamps in 2024 involving cross-departmental employee participation, the company cultivated hands-on experience that fostered understanding of AI’s operational potential. Recognizing the shortcomings of off-the-shelf AI services—especially concerning data privacy and regulatory compliance—Wertgarantie opted for an open-source infrastructure built on OpenWebUI. This architecture integrates multiple language models and workflow automation, enabling seamless embedding of AI into customer service and internal operations. The company also created the WERTlab to promote innovation, governance, and responsible AI management, with applications such as the WERTbot customer assistant currently under evaluation. Collaboration with startups through a venture-clienting approach accelerated innovation while maintaining flexibility and cost efficiency, founding three principles for AI transformation: open-source adoption, combined internal and external expertise, and ecosystem engagement.

Parallel to these technological advancements, the Hamburger Mittelstand gathered at the "Tag des Mittelstands" event under the motto "Wachsen, wandeln, wagen: Neue Wege für Ihr Unternehmen," where medium-sized businesses discussed future strategies amid challenges of skilled labor shortages, regulatory pressures, and global crises. Speakers urged leveraging AI to streamline business processes and expanding internationally. Hamburg’s Chamber of Crafts President, Hjalmar Stemmann, highlighted the need for political support to improve conditions for attracting skilled workers, including better housing and business spaces. Plans are underway to create business hubs for companies displaced by urban development. The event emphasized innovation as critical to overcoming persistent structural challenges affecting the local economy.
