Western and European Leaders Convene in Paris to Bolster Support for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Western nations led by France and the UK have gathered in Paris to deliberate further assistance for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia. This coalition, comprising over 35 countries, is focusing on critical areas such as missile defense enhancements and the possibility of joint military exercises, as highlighted by French President Emmanuel Macron. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is confirmed to attend the talks, while the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains uncertain.

A key topic is the urgent need for more ammunition for Ukraine's Patriot air defense systems, vital for countering Russian ballistic missile attacks. However, production of PAC-3 missiles in the United States remains slow. At the NATO summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump granted Ukraine a license to produce its own Patriot ammunition, but this is regarded as a long-term solution rather than immediate relief.

The coalition has committed legally to guaranteeing Ukraine's security should Russian aggression escalate further. Parallel to this, EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss imposing additional sanctions on Russia targeting specific individuals and organizations.

On the ground, fighting continues intensely in eastern Ukraine, especially near Kostjantyniwka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk, with Russian forces persisting in their offensive supported by air power.

Contextually, this coalition emerged partly as a European response to US President Trump’s direct communications with Russian President Putin following his election in January 2025.
