Young Voices and Rural Challenges Highlighted in German Political Dialogues

The German Federal Youth Council (DBJR) recently hosted a parliamentary evening in Berlin titled "Shaping Generational Justice - Strengthening Politics for and with Young People." This event brought together youth organization leaders, federal politicians, and civil society representatives to address how political decisions can better serve the younger generation both now and in the future.

DBJR Chairman Wendelin Haag emphasized that generation justice is not just an abstract notion but a pressing issue impacting how young people live, learn, work, and participate in society. Key topics at the event included pension policies essential for maintaining youth trust in social security, social structures that promote participation while reducing uncertainties, and the infrastructure necessary to support democratic engagement. DBJR Chairwoman Daniela Broda highlighted the active democratic participation of youth groups, while noting the vital need for sufficient time, infrastructure, and political will to sustain this involvement. A multi-party panel also provided diverse perspectives on cross-sectoral policies aimed at ensuring generational equity.

Meanwhile, the Altmark region in Saxony-Anhalt faces structural difficulties such as population decline, widespread vacancies, and economic stagnation. The village of Zichtau, part of Gardelegen, exemplifies these issues with numerous local businesses, banks, and medical practices closing, prolonged commutes due to limited local jobs, and slow infrastructure progress, notably the delayed expansion of the A14 highway. To address these concerns, a political discussion called "Fakt ist!" is engaging local citizens in dialogue with key political figures including FDP's Lydia Hüskens, SPD's Franziska Kersten, and district administrator Steve Kanitz. The event aims to explore how the community can seize opportunities for revitalization and voice their expectations from government institutions.
