Youth Engage Actively in Local Bavarian Communities Through Political Participation Initiative

A participation project organized by the municipal youth work of Pfaffenhofen district brought together local youth, mayors Georg Ott and Wolfgang Hagl, youth representatives, council members, and community leaders to discuss and shape their communities in Ilmmünster and Hettenshausen. Moderated by participation coach Jona Cäcilia Förstmann, the event used interactive methods like the '4 Corners' game to foster dialogue between young people and adults about sports interests and community needs.

Discussion centered on municipal responsibilities and the lack of sufficient decision-making opportunities for youth. The young participants proposed ideas focused on enhancing leisure activities, improving community spaces, and even utopian visions for their towns. Recurring concerns included traffic safety near playgrounds, insufficient youth spaces, overcrowded school buses, poor lighting, and broken football nets. The youth also expressed a desire for a Dirtpark in Hettenshausen and additional green spaces.

Mayors Ott and Hagl emphasized the importance of political and administrative support for successful youth participation and outlined potential steps for implementing the group's ideas. The event ended with a raffle of vouchers as thanks to the youth. The next meeting is planned for February 10, 2026, at Hettenshausen’s newly designed village center, where progress will be reviewed.

This initiative highlights an active approach to involving youth in community development at the local government level within Bavaria, reflecting a growing emphasis on grassroots political engagement among young residents.
