Youth Political Engagement Grows with 'Politik mit der Jugend' and ProVote Initiative

Efforts to boost political awareness and participation among young people in Germany are gaining momentum through targeted projects and international cooperation. Levi Osseforth and Albiana Imeraj spearhead the initiative 'Politik mit der Jugend,' which incorporates the innovative 'Gesprächsbär' tool to encourage teenagers to engage in political discussions, fostering direct dialogue and awareness.

Complementing this localized approach, the ProVote partner meeting held in the Hanover Region brought together representatives from European local and regional governments, civil society, and democracy experts to focus on increasing voter turnout and inclusivity. Vice President Cordula Drautz emphasized that vibrant local democracy depends on citizen engagement, highlighting the benefits of cross-European experience sharing.

Keynote speakers addressed contemporary challenges: Ernesto Nebot Pomar noted the rise of extremist parties leveraging social media, outpacing traditional parties, despite successes in voter turnout. Experts Pauline Hofmann and Türkân Deniz-Roggenbuck underscored the necessity of accessible, barrier-free participation and strategic inclusion of migrant communities to strengthen democratic trust.

Workshops facilitated the exchange of best practices regarding youth involvement in politics, accessible voting, and community engagement, with successful models presented from Barcelona and Castellón. As part of the EU-funded CERV program, ProVote consolidates efforts to make democracy more inclusive and citizen-centered, complementing grassroots projects like 'Politik mit der Jugend' aimed specifically at empowering youth voices in Germany.

Together, these initiatives reflect a broader commitment to addressing political alienation among young people and enhancing democratic participation with innovative, inclusive strategies.
