Chancellor Merz Warns of Major Job Cuts at Volkswagen Amid Industrial Challenges in Germany

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a stern warning about the significant job reductions looming at Volkswagen as the automaker undergoes a major restructuring. Speaking at a CDU campaign event in Langenhagen near Hannover on September 5, 2026, Merz expressed his support for Volkswagen's recently agreed cost-cutting measures, which include the potential elimination of up to 50,000 jobs. He emphasized that this situation exemplifies the broader challenges facing Germany’s automotive industry and the risk of a shrinking industrial base.

Merz stressed that "Germany must remain an industrial nation," highlighting that the country is currently witnessing a large-scale loss of industrial employment. He welcomed the avoidance of open conflict within Volkswagen’s supervisory board, but cautioned that the agreement remains provisional and more clarity is needed regarding the future of several VW plants.

Sebastian Lechner, the CDU leader in Niedersachsen, echoed these concerns, describing the postponement of decisions about Volkswagen’s plants in Emden, Hannover, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm until mid-2027 as a "grace period." He criticized the state government for missing early opportunities to prepare for the challenges facing VW and expressed uncertainty about the prospects of these facilities. The restructuring plan envisions significant job cuts and a reduced lineup of vehicle models.

The Chancellor’s visit was marked by heightened security measures due to the politically sensitive atmosphere around this issue, with about 500 carefully vetted CDU members attending the secured event. Merz underscored the pivotal role Volkswagen plays in Niedersachsen's economy, stating no other state is as dependent on a single industrial company.
