Emergency Services in Schleswig-Holstein Face Volunteer Shortages Amid New Legislative Challenges

Jasper Balke, a member of the Landtag representing Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, recently visited the Johanniter emergency services in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, to discuss the operational challenges and evolving roles within emergency services and civil protection. The discussions highlighted the integration of Johanniter into Schleswig-Holstein's civil protection framework, notably through a newly established Task Force designed to anticipate and respond to increasing crisis scenarios.

Key issues addressed included the critical shortage of volunteers, which Johanniter's regional board members Yonathan Arnold and Hans-Martin Grusnick emphasized as a major barrier to effective service delivery. Furthermore, the upcoming amendment to the Emergency Services Act was a focal point, with concerns raised about its potential impact on emergency paramedics' scope of practice. Arnold argued that emergency paramedics possess the qualifications necessary to act independently in patient care, cautioning against restricting their competencies, which could hinder the handling of severe emergencies.

Additionally, Grusnick spoke about the importance of democratic education for paramedic trainees, underscoring political communication and local politics as integral to fostering democratic values among emergency personnel. The visit underlined the need for legislative and operational support to strengthen Germany’s emergency services amid growing demands.
