Extreme Heatwave Forces Cancellation of Amateur Football Matches Across Germany

The extreme heatwave forecasted to reach temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius has led to the cancellation of all amateur football matches over the weekend in parts of Germany. The Württemberg Football Association announced a complete halt to all championship and friendly matches across classes and age groups to protect players from health risks associated with high temperatures and intense UV exposure. Championship matches will be rescheduled if weather conditions improve next week. Permits for private tournaments and referee assignments have also been revoked, with advice for organizers of unofficial events to consider cancellations. Similarly, the Badischer Football Association canceled its "Ü-Meisterschaften" and a planned inclusion tournament, recommending that other matches be moved to evening hours to avoid peak heat.

Medical expert Andrea Nakoinz, who developed a heat protection plan for the German Health Ministry, has highlighted the dangers of competing in such heat, warning that performance sports under these conditions are risky and increasingly hazardous due to climate change. She criticized the lack of uniform regulations and clear guidelines in German sports concerning heat safety and called for standardized cancellation rules and better preparation to safeguard all athletes, particularly amateurs who might underestimate their limits.
